Declare Your Independence And Stop Smoking For Good This Fourth Of July
This Independence Day, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, in conjunction with Ralphs and L.A. Care Health Plan, is helping LA County residents declare their freedom from smoking by giving away free two-week starter kits of nicotine patches or gum. The quit smoking aids are free to residents of LA County at 47 participating Ralphs Pharmacies throughout the county between the hours of 1 p.m. - 8 p.m., while supplies last.

CQ Examines House Foreign Affairs Committee Outline To Overhaul U.S. Foreign Aid
Congressional Quarterly examines a "three-page concept paper" issued by the House Foreign Affairs Committee that lays out a plan to overhaul U.S. foreign aid. The committee suggests "giving the administration greater flexibility to control aid in exchange for greater public oversight and a performance- and need-driven allocation system," the news service writes. "The plan would reorganize aid programs around seven purposes, including "reducing poverty and alleviating human suffering," "supporting human rights and democracy," and "expanding prosperity through trade and investment,"" according to CQ. The House committee wants to enhance USAID"s role, "giving the agency a seat on the National Security Council and putting it in charge of the U.S. global AIDS plan and the Millennium Challenge Corporation," the news service writes.

Experimental Drug Five Times More Effective Against MDR-TB Than Conventional Therapy
A Johnson & Johnson-run study found that its experimental drug TMC207 could make conventional tuberculosis treatment five times more effective against multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) because it cleared traces of the TB bacteria in the sputum of 48 percent of study volunteers after eight weeks, Reuters reports (Emery, Reuters, 6/3). The results were published on Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Acsys Interactive: Empowering Patients And Clinicians To Co-Produce Quality Care

A collaborative team with members from the Yale Center for Medical Informatics, Yale-New Haven Children"s Hospital/Yale School of Medicine and Acsys Interactive have responded to a national call for proposals from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Project HealthDesign:Rethinking the Power and Potential of Personal Health Records, with the design of a trial involving a diverse pediatric population with multiple chronic illnesses. We will be testing whether and how information about patterns of everyday living can be collected and interpreted such that patients can take action to better manage their health and clinicians can integrate new insights into clinical care processes. It is envisioned that leading edge technology such as the Google Health PHR platform along with Apple"s iPhone or iTouch mobile devices will be used to capture the ODLs. The proposed project team includes specialists experienced in these approaches and ethnographic evaluation; in pediatric disease management; in patient-centered care involving patient-clinician-technology partnerships; in bioethics; and in IT technical development. The team includes Bonnie Kaplan, PhD, of the Yale Center for Medical Informatics and also President of Kaplan Associates, Alia Bazzy-Asaad, MD, Chief, Pediatric Respiratory Medicine Section, Yale-New Haven Children"s Hospital/Yale School of Medicine along with Alan Mocksfield, VP Interactive Technology, Acsys Interactive. Dr. Kaplan relates, "Our innovative combination of techniques provides the kind of nuanced and broad view of patient-clinician-designer collaboration that co-produces quality health care." Announcement of successful proposals is expected to take place in late fall.
