Palliative Care Research To Benefit From $1.5 Million Award
The American Cancer Society and the National Palliative Care Research Center (NPCRC) are awarding $1.5 million in research grants to researchers at eleven institutions for studies aimed at reducing suffering for seriously ill patients and their family caregivers. The studies will be conducted over the next two years. The NPCRC, in collaboration with the American Cancer Society, has directed over $5 million towards supporting 38 palliative care research projects since starting this initiative three years ago.

Sinovac Provides Update On Clinical Trial For H1N1 Vaccine Trials
Sinovac Biotech Ltd. (NYSE AMEX: SVA), a leading provider of vaccines in China, announced today that the clinical trial of its A/H1N1 influenza vaccine is proceeding well. All of the volunteers have received their first shot of the vaccine and, during the three-day observation of safety, the preliminary tests on the A/H1N1 influenza vaccine have indicated that the vaccine is safe and reliable in humans.

Conference: Combating Heart Disease And Stroke: Planning For A Healthier Europe
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the main cause of early death and disability in Europe, accounting each year for the loss of more than 2 million lives and costing the EU economy an estimated 192 billion euros. Top level stakeholders and EU and national policymakers are meeting in Brussels to assess current prevention programs and to develop a strategy for Cardiovascular Health.

Columnist Examines Group's Effort To Urge CVS To Keep All Condoms Unlocked In Stores

Tennessean columnist Getahn Ward examined the "Cure CVS: Unlock the Condoms Initiative," led by the group Change to Win, which claims that the pharmacy chain"s practice of locking up some condoms in certain neighborhoods might decrease access for young adults and minorities, potentially increasing their risk of HIV and unintended pregnancy. CVS contends that the practice is used as a theft deterrent but said it does have some condoms available that are not locked up. Officials from Walgreens say their stores do not lock up condoms, and Rite Aid officials say they do not have a specific policy in place, but access to some personal items, including condoms, does require the assistance of an associate at stores with much theft (Ward, Tennessean, 6/17).
