Gene Test Determines Transplant Drug Tolerance
A simple genetic test can determine a kidney transplant patient"s tolerance for a potent anti-rejection medication, according to an upcoming study in the Journal of the American Society Nephrology (JASN). The test could allow doctors to individualize each patient"s dose, optimizing the drug"s benefits and minimizing its side effects.

NMC Statement: Misleading Information In Nursing Standard
This week Nursing Standard published some misleading and speculative information regarding the NMC"s registration fee. The story, titled "Registration fees could increase as regulator goes into black", also included factually inaccurate information about the NMC"s diversity data collection exercise which will soon be launched.

Genetically Elevated Levels Of Lipoprotein Associated With Increased Risk Of Heart Attack
A genetic analysis of data from three studies suggests that genetically elevated levels of lipoprotein(a) are associated with an increased risk of heart attack, according to a study in the June 10 issue of JAMA.

Conference: Combating Heart Disease And Stroke: Planning For A Healthier Europe

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the main cause of early death and disability in Europe, accounting each year for the loss of more than 2 million lives and costing the EU economy an estimated 192 billion euros. Top level stakeholders and EU and national policymakers are meeting in Brussels to assess current prevention programs and to develop a strategy for Cardiovascular Health. The one day conference, organised by the European Heart Network and the European Society of Cardiology, is part of Work Package 5 of the EuroHeart Project. New research will be presented at the conference, which highlights striking differences across different countries in Europe both in terms of national prevention policies and cardiovascular mortality.
