Novartis Successfully Demonstrates Capabilities Of Cell-based Technology For Production Of A(H1N1) Vaccine
Novartis has successfully completed the production of the first batch of influenza A(H1N1) vaccine, weeks ahead of expectations. Cell-based manufacturing technology[1] allows vaccine production to be initiated once a pandemic virus strain is identified without the need to adapt the virus strain to grow in eggs, as with traditional vaccine technologies. This advance has cut weeks off the time required to begin vaccine production. This first batch of ten liters of wild type influenza A(H1N1) vaccine monobulk will be used for pre-clinical evaluation and testing and is also being considered for use in clinical trials. It demonstrates the value of the cell-based production approach, that is also being used by Novartis with reassortant influenza A(H1N1) seed.

Expanded Practice Offers Greater Choice For Dental Patients In Williton

Somerset people living in the Williton area now have a wider choice when it comes to choosing an NHS dentist. The Stoneleigh House Dental Practice, based in High Street, has recently undergone major improvements and expanded so that alongside Dr. Andre Louw there are now three other dentists working part time. The practice opened its doors to the public some weeks ago, but the formal opening was held last Wednesday, May 6th. Jane Barrie OBE, Chairman of NHS Somerset unveiled a commemorative plaque and joined local dignitaries, employees and friends to mark the occasion. Dr Louw said: "We are very grateful for the support and assistance we have received from Somerset Primary Care Trust which has enabled us to provide the excellent new facilities here in Williton. "Our aim is to ensure that every patient receives the highest possible quality of care. All our staff - the hygienist, dental nurses and receptionists - try to make every visit to the dentist as pleasurable as possible. The entire practice and treatment areas are accessible to wheelchair users and we will do our best to meet any special needs you may have," said Dr Louw. Martin Fulford, Dental Health Adviser to NHS Somerset, said: "NHS Somerset is committed to improving public access to NHS dental services across the county. "We are pleased to have been involved in the development of Stoneleigh House for the benefit of those living in and around Williton. The new practice already has 3000 registered patients and has a total capacity for up to another 1000. "It will provide better access to high quality NHS dental treatment and meet the needs of local people for years to come," said Mr Fulford. More (1 of 2) Stoneleigh House Dental Practice is open Monday to Friday from 9.00am - 5.00pm, closing for lunch between 1.00-2.00pm. NHS Somerset
