Advance Toward New Drugs That Turn Genes On And Off
Scientists in Michigan and California are reporting an advance toward development of a new generation of drugs that treat disease by orchestrating how genes in the body produce proteins involved in arthritis, cancer and a range of other disorders. Acting like an "on-off switch," the medications might ratchet up the production of proteins in genes working at abnormally low levels or shut off genes producing an abnormal protein linked to disease. Their report is in the current issue of ACS Chemical Biology, a monthly journal.

Fungal Toxin Mystery Solved Using Biolog's Phenotype MicroArrayTM Technology
An important breakthrough in fungal toxin biology has been made possible through the use of Biolog"s Phenotype MicroArray technology. This major advance is described in two recent publications from a group at CSIRO in Queensland, Australia. The work by Donald Gardiner and his collaborators has recently been published in online editions of the journals Fungal Genetics and Biology and Microbiology.

Test Detects Molecular Marker Of Aging In Humans
In 2004, researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center announced a crucial discovery in the understanding of cellular aging. They found that as cells and tissues age, the expression of a key protein, called p16INK4a, dramatically increases in most mammalian organs. Because p16INK4a is a tumor suppressor protein, cancer researchers are interested in its role in cellular aging and cancer prevention.

Knocking The Wind Out Of Asthmatics: Help From Hippocrates

Last week the FDA knocked the wind out of asthmatics by requesting the manufacturers of Singulair, a popular leukotriene blocking asthma and allergy drug, to upgrade their warning against psychotic side effects. Further respiratory distress was imposed on Zicam users when the FDA also last week announced warnings that the drug may cause a loss of smell. What"s an allergy sufferer to do? The manufacturers of the ALCAT Test, a food intolerance test, suggest going back to Hippocrates" dictum, "Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food". Last week while the FDA was issuing warnings about allergy drugs in the United States, researchers from the University of Pavia (Italy), Polyclinic San Mateo, were reporting at the annual Congress of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) held in Warsaw, Poland, that the ALCAT Test can accurately predict foods that cause GI problems and dermatological symptoms. The researchers reported that 54% of patients with GI problems, and 86% of patients with chronic urticaria and dermatitis, experienced, "significant improvement" merely by avoiding foods indicated by the ALCAT Test. The only treatment was avoidance of specific foods that were shown through the test to cause inappropriate immune activation. The ALCAT Test is a simple blood test that requires only a small quantity of blood. The results are specified to each individual, based upon their own unique biochemical and genetic makeup. The test is quickly becoming recognized as a way to safely and effectively avoid chronic inflammatory and allergy like problems, like asthma, perennial rhinitis and skin problems, but also metabolic disorders that interfere with weight loss, and other inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and migraine, without the use of drugs. Hippocrates must be smiling. About Cell Science Systems Cell Science Systems (CSS) is a vertically integrated life sciences company and the worldwide market leader in food sensitivity testing as the manufacturer of the ALCAT Test. ALCAT identifies cellular reactions to over 300 foods and chemicals. These inflammatory reactions are linked to chronic health problems like obesity and diabetes, as well as skin, joint, and digestive disorders. Located in Deerfield Beach, Florida, CSS is a FDA-inspected and registered, cGMP medical device manufacturer and operates a CLIA-certified laboratory. Cell Science Systems
