FDA Approves Hologic's Adiana(R) Permanent Contraception System
Hologic, Inc., (Hologic or the Company) (Nasdaq: HOLX), a leading developer, manufacturer and supplier of premium diagnostics, medical imaging systems and surgical products dedicated to serving the healthcare needs of women, announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Company"s premarket approval (PMA) application for the Adiana(R) permanent contraception system. The Adiana system is designed to provide women a minimally-invasive, non-incision alternative to traditional, surgical means of permanent contraception. In January 2009, Hologic received CE marking approval for the Adiana system and commenced marketing and sales of this product in certain European countries.

Study Of Pulmonary Hypertension Treatment In Sickle Cell Patients Halted By NHLBI
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health has stopped a clinical trial testing a drug treatment for pulmonary hypertension in adults with sickle cell disease nearly one year early due to safety concerns. In an interim review of safety data from 33 participants who completed 16 weeks of treatment, researchers found that, compared to participants on placebo (dummy pill), participants taking sildenafil (Revatio) were significantly more likely to have serious medical problems. The most common problem was episodes of severe pain called sickle cell crises, which resulted in hospitalization. No deaths have been associated with the drug in the clinical trial.

Major Medical Groups Back Comp Effectiveness Legislation

"Major medical organizations are urging health committees in the House and Senate to make comparative-effectiveness research a key component of healthcare reform," Modern HealthCare reports. The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee"s bill "plans for a new federal center on health outcomes research was seen by some GOP members as a possible means to ration healthcare." But "a letter, co-signed by the American Medical Association and more than 60 other groups, countered that comparative-effectiveness research would not lead to "cookbook" medicine or rationing of expensive forms of care" (Lubell, 6/26).
