Canadians Watch U.S. Reform Effort Closely
American health care reform has become a "hot topic north of the border," the Washington Times reports. "If Mr. Obama succeeds, the U.S. could draw even more Canadian doctors and nurses to the U.S., exacerbating a shortage of medical professionals, said Dr. Brian Day, a Canadian health care critic and former head of the Canadian Medical Association. If Mr. Obama fails, perhaps Canada could open its system to "medical tourism" from the U.S., Dr. Day said." Under the Canadian system, everyone is insured and has "access to basic health care without ever seeing a doctor or hospital bill." But 70% of Canadians also have "some form of supplemental health insurance," in part because of long wait times for tests and treatments under the government plan. For Canadian citizens who become ill in the U.S., it is often cheaper to "ride on a private Lear jet back to Canada" than to be treated in a U.S. hospital.

Fecal Incontinence And Quality Of Life
Fecal incontinence (FI) is a normal part of aging, or the perception that no treatment is available. Statement By Medicare Rights Center President Joseph Baker On Recent Progress Toward Passage Of Health Reform Legislation

Yesterday"s Senate HELP Committee"s vote for a health reform bill and the beginning today of the committee markup process in the House of Representatives mark significant steps forward on the path to comprehensive health reform. Both the House and Senate HELP Committee bills provide valuable new health coverage options, including a public plan, to uninsured Americans that can help people with disabilities who are stuck in the two-year waiting period for Medicare. The House bill, in particular, will help more low-income people with Medicare receive assistance with drug and medical bills, and will allow them to keep a modest nest egg for their retirement. I urge the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over Medicare and Medicaid, to ensure that Americans living near the poverty level who would benefit from proposed Medicaid expansions continue to receive that coverage as a wrap-around to Medicare when they age into the program.
