Abnormal Brain Circuits May Prevent Movement Disorder
Most people who carry a genetic mutation for a movement disorder called dystonia will never develop symptoms, a phenomenon that has puzzled scientists since the first genetic mutation was identified in the 1990"s. Now, scientists at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research have figured out why these mutation carriers are protected from symptoms of the disorder they have an additional lesion that evens the score.

New Family-Focused Model Of Depression Care Needed To Minimize Risks And Problems For Parents With Depression And Their Children
Health and social service professionals who care for adults with depression should not only tackle their clients" physical and mental health, but also detect and prevent possible spillover effects on their children, says a new report from the National Research Council and Institute of Medicine. To achieve this new family-focused model of depression care, federal and state agencies, nonprofits, and the private sector will have to experiment with nontraditional ways of organizing, paying for, and delivering services, said the committee that wrote the report.

The Union To Offer 8 MDR-TB Courses This Year

The Union will offer 8 MDR-TB courses in 2009 as part of its commitment to addressing the global increase in multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) tuberculosis. The next 5-day intensive course will be held in Beijing, China on 18-22 May 2009. The Comprehensive Course on Clinical Management of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis is designed for senior-level programme and clinical staff and emphasises practical knowledge and skills in the management of the MDR-TB. The course coordinators are Dr Jose A Caminero and Dr Chiang Chen-Yuan. Instruction will be in English, with Chinese translation as required.
