FoldRx Pharmaceuticals Announces Positive Results From Pivotal Phase II/III Clinical Study Of Tafamidis
FoldRx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (FoldRx) announced positive results from its pivotal Phase II/III clinical study of the company"s lead compound, tafamidis (Fx-1006A), in patients suffering from TTR amyloid polyneuropathy (ATTR-PN), a fatal orphan disease also known as Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy (FAP). Liver transplantation is the only currently available treatment option for this progressive neurodegenerative disease. Preliminary results from the first randomized controlled trial ever completed in this disease demonstrate that tafamidis treatment significantly halts disease progression in ATTR-PN, reduces the burden of disease after 18 months compared to placebo, and appears to be safe and well-tolerated.

Novel Epigenetic Markers Of Melanoma May Herald New Treatments For Patients
Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer, diagnosed in more than 50,000 new patients in the United States annually. While the rate of incidences continues to rise, survival rate has not improved and the race is on to find the genetic and cellular changes driving melanoma and to devise new means of detection and treatment. In a study published online in Genome Research, scientists have mapped chemical modifications of DNA in the melanoma genome, finding new markers that will help develop more effective treatment strategies to fight this disease.

WHO Antivirals Arrive In Nigeria

Tamiflu Xinhua reports the WHO on Tuesday donated doses of the antiviral Tamiflu totaling 408 million naira - $2.8 million - to Nigeria, "enough to treat at least 184,800 people." Nigeria is one of 72 countries that will receive Tamiflu - a drug shown to stop the spread and severity of the H1N1 flu. "[P]riority was given to vulnerable countries, taking into consideration national manufacturing and procurement capacity," Xinhua writes (Xinhua, 6/3).
